Shoes Belongs to Female… Right?
Way back ago i took a German’s class to fill-in the long holiday. I learned alot, especially that German’s, Holland’s, French, Italian & even Spanish rooted in the same lingo, Roman’s. So, that’s why like French, German’s also classified their nouns as feminine and masculine groups.
One day my tutor shot me with a pop question, “What group does shoes belongs to?” (of course it was in German, but i can’t think how 2 say it in German right now)
Spontaneously i answered, “Feminine!” (with lots of confidence AND in English, BUT because it’s pronounced the same in German, it’s forgivable, right?)
The Tutor then asked me, “What’s make you think that?” (in German)
“Well, generally female DOES have more shoes than male, right?”, i answered it in English (i know, this one unforgivable) with a look that can be translated as “Doh, what else?”
And so, for the first time, i saw my tutor got speechless. (and maybe so the rest of my fellow classmates?) Seeing him got speechless, i felt “oops, did i do wrong?” But, since he drop the topic, i didn’t got any confirmation.
Long after, i happened to meet a friend which i haven’t been seeing for ages. It seems that she got curious too, because she still remembered that i once told her about the question. She actually gave time to look up on subject, and even researched the reason why. (Because she study Philosophy? i dunno, maybe…) Well, the answer to my question is, ‘shoes belongs to masculine group in German languages’!!
WHY?? well, way back ago only males that go out to look for food for the family. and one of their daily tools is shoes. THAT’S WHY it classified in masculine group.
Oh I see…, yea i have to admit my logic based on current facts. i could accept if armwatch classified as masculine’s due that to female there are LOTS other varieties to accesorize their hand. But, how about bags? back in the old days, females also have it, right? be in a form of purse, pouch, or whatever..
But, what do i know.. if German people decides to make it a masculine’s too, it’s their language, i’m not a German…
